Plans for 47-unit Mayo housing development under appeal

PLANS for a 47-unit housing development on the outskirts of Ballina are under appeal.

Developers Thawside Ltd. were granted planning permission by Mayo County Council last month to construct a total of 47 houses at Friars Court, Laghtadawannagh, along the Killala Road.

That decision has now been appealed to An Coimisiún Pleanála by the Friars Court Residents Association.

The proposed development would comprise 32 three-bedroom semi-detached homes, six two-bedroom semi-detached units, and nine four-bedroom detached houses.

The site is accessed via the existing Friars Court development which directly accesses the regional route, R314.

In a submission to the council, the residents association raised concerns about the proposed development.

They accepted there are housing needs and had no objection to the building of additional housing in the vicinity of the existing estate. However, the use of the existing roadway through the estate to any additional residential traffic would cause serious health and safety issues.

There was also concern that there is pyrite in houses within Friars Court and construction traffic could have a detrimental impact.
