Dugort beach, one of many stunning locations along the Wild Atlantic Way. But the local roads that make up the iconic coastline route need investment, says Achill Councillor Paul McNamara.

Wild Atlantic roads deserve special status - Mayo councillor

ROADS along the Wild Atlantic Way deserve special status to ensure their upkeep.

The suggestion has come from Achill-based Councillor Paul McNamara who has requested an application for extra funding for local, regional and LIS roads.

With road work programmes impacted by rising costs, Councillor McNamara is concerned about the lack of investment in these roads. And if a further allocation isn't forthcoming in September, they will fall into disrepair.

A lot of local roads are main infrastructure in the tourism sector, leading to beaches and other amenities, and a 30 per cent reduction in works this year will impact them, he told a municipal district meeting.

Having lobbied the ministers, Councillor McNamara requested Mayo County Council to appeal to the Department of Tourism and Department of Rural and Community Development seeking additional funds for local, regional and LIS roads.

The Wild Atlantic Way is a national treasure, promoted around the world, but no significant money has ever been put into it, Councillor McNamara commented. It was always there. But it needs investment and it should be subject to special status when it comes to the upkeep of roads, he commented.
