Broadcaster Callan raises ire of Mayo GAA fans over 'dose' remarks

Broadcaster, satirist and impressionist Oliver Callan is facing criticism from Mayo GAA supporters over suggestions they have 'become a dose for their over-the-top celebrations'.

In an article published in today's Irish Independent, he observed: "Despite brilliant forwards, all Mayo have done is beat London, get trounced by Roscommon, did nothing for weeks until they hobbled past Meath thanks to a red card, were grazed by Monaghan who had a point waved wide by an Einstein on umpire duty, beat a Cork side who couldn’t score through their open defence, and were then gift-wrapped the final by Louth.

"The head-the-ball Mayo celebrations even after non-knockout matches continue to confound county followers elsewhere.

"They used to be fun to neutrals, now they’re becoming a dose.

"Mayo fans never even seem to be in Mayo any more, they’re mostly everywhere else, talking about being from Mayo.

"Its county board has blown about €20 million on All-Ireland efforts since 2010, as much as Dublin. This will be an eighth attempt at a final."

He further claimed: "Mayo have cruised to a final on crazy luck without even noticing, thanks to their undiminished feelings of greatness no matter how many times they fall on their arses.

"They’re quick to claim how curses and dark forces continue to rob them of their entitled destiny, but rarely admit how luck has brought them to yet another final they seem so certain to flunk."

A number of supporters have drawn The Connaught Telegraph's attention to the comments, pointing to the fact Callan may have got somewhat carried away with himself. . .even if his objective is to cause a reaction.
