Water shortages hit Mayo village

WATER shortages are being experienced in the Bonniconlon area.

Local Councillor John O'Hara raised the plight of the local community at Mayo County Council's monthly meeting, saying the water has been off now 23 times since Christmas.

He has proposed a solution - running a pipe from Drumsheen to the Bonniconlon reservoir, and he has asked the council to follow this up with Uisce Éireann.

Councillor O'Hara noted the work of crews in trying to keep water flowing but it needs bigger works, including replacing pipes, he said.

The amount of water they're getting isn't sufficient, he added.

His call was supported by Councillor Annie May Reape who said there has been shortages every weekend for the last three or four weeks, with families and visitors left without water. The reservoir is at capacity, she said.

In 2026, to be without water in the middle of a heatwave was 'unimaginable' for anyone, Councillor Marie Therese Duffy commented.

The council is to contact Uisce Éireann about the pipe extension request.
