Disqualified driver arrested after tractor stopped in north Mayo

A driver has been arrested after Gardaí stopped an agricultural vehicle during a high-visibility mobile patrol in Ballycastle on Tuesday evening.

The driver was disqualified from driving at the time of the stop.

Gardaí carried out a check on the insurance database using Active Mobility technology.

The check showed the driver had no insurance, which they admitted. The driver also had no valid driving licence, which they admitted.

The vehicle's tax had expired more than 2,600 days previously.

The tractor was seized.

The driver will appear before the courts charged with a number of offences.

The penalty for driving while disqualified is a fine of up to €5,000 and/or six months imprisonment, plus an additional two-year disqualification.

The penalty for having no insurance is a fine of up to €5,000 and/or six months imprisonment, plus a two-year disqualification.

Gardaí have reiterated that insurance and a valid driving licence are legal requirements for everyone's safety on public roads.
