Mayo mart sees good trade at latest sale
THERE were some good cattle on show at Balla Mart on Saturday, with a good trade to match.
Sellers travelled from throughout the west and even the midlands and there was a nice stir this week for heavy bullocks, with all prices up due to northern buyers who were very eager for stock.
Average prices in the bullocks were: 300kg to 400kg €4.09/kg; 400kg to 500kg €4.16/kg; 500kg plus €3.90/kg.
Top prices in the bullocks include the following:
345kg LMX €1,920 (€5.57/kg)
405kg SAX €2,270 (€5.60/kg)
690kg LMX €3,040 (€4.41/kg)
770kg SAX €3,280 (€4.26/kg)
This week there was some lovely heifers and they were well up on last week.
Some lovely Belgian Blue breeding heifers that travelled from Moate in Co. Westmeath generated some great interest and created intense bidding from bidders online and around the ring.
Average prices in the heifers were: 300kg to 400kg €4.87/kg - up 87 cent/kg on last week; 400kg to 500kg €4.19/kg - up 29 cent/kg; and heifers 500kgs plus averaged €4.03/kg.
A Dovea ‘Moderator’ BB6700 heifer weighing 485kg sold for €4,050, while another 495kg heifer made €3,450.

This week there were 90 cows on offer. Dry cows 500kg plus were making €3.74/kg - up 20 cent on last week.
There were some very good prices paid in the cows with some heavy cows making better prices than the bullocks, as can be seen in the prices below.

A September ‘23 BB cow with a heifer calf at foot made €4,340 for a Manulla farmer.
Bull weanlings were sold in ring 1 following the bullocks. Bull weanlings 200kg to 350kg averaged €6.07/kg, those 350kg to 450kg averaged €4.34/kg, and weanling bulls 450kg plus averaged €4.43kg - up 22 cent/kg on last week.
