Minister welcomes awarding of design contract for Mayo Community Sports Campus

MINISTER of State Alan Dillon has welcomed further progress for the Mayo Community Sports Campus in Castlebar, with the official awarding of the design contract for the project.

Local firm Tobin Consulting Engineers has been appointed to lead the design phase, including detailed design, tender preparation, and project management.

The campus represents a €12.1 million investment, supported by a €7.5 million grant already secured.

Located at Knockaphunta near Lough Lannagh, the new campus will become a hub for regional and national sports, featuring a world-class running track, floodlit all-weather 4G pitches for GAA, soccer and rugby, high-performance training facilities, and fully inclusive changing areas, all designed with sustainability in mind.

Preparatory works and environmental assessments are underway on site to ensure compliance ahead of construction.

Minister Dillon said: "Awarding the design contract to a highly capable local firm like Tobin Consulting Engineers ensures that local expertise is driving a project of regional importance across Castlebar, Mayo and the entire west of Ireland.

"This facility will not only nurture our future sports stars and support high-performance athletes, but it will also provide an inclusive, sustainable space for local clubs, schools, and the wider community to stay active and healthy.”

Tender documents are expected to be completed by year-end, keeping the project on track for contract awards in March or April 2027.
