"Our work is not yet finished" - Mayo community opposing wind farm project
The Mayo Abbey Cunlaghfadda Committee has issued a statement following the decision by Mayo County Council to refuse planning permission for the proposed Cunlaghfadda Wind Farm
It stated: "Firstly, we wish to acknowledge the recent decision by Mayo County Council to refuse planning permission for the proposed Cunlaghfadda Wind Farm.
"This represents a significant milestone and reflects the serious planning concerns identified by the council, including impacts on our landscape, cultural heritage and residential amenity.
"The council concluded that the proposed turbines would have unacceptable impacts on the sensitive landscape surrounding Mayo Abbey, the setting of our nationally important ecclesiastical heritage, and nearby residential properties.
"We sincerely thank everyone who supported this campaign by attending public meetings, submitting observations, sharing information, displaying posters and speaking to neighbours.
"The unprecedented level of community engagement demonstrated the strength of local feeling and undoubtedly ensured that the concerns of residents were fully considered.
"However, our work is not yet finished.
"While the wind farm application has been refused by Mayo County Council, the developer has the right to appeal that decision to An Coimisiún Pleanála (ACP). In addition, the proposed 110kV electrical substation and associated grid connection is a completely separate planning application which is currently before ACP for determination.
"The closing date for public submissions on the substation application is September 1.
"The committee believes it is vital that the community once again makes its voice heard.
"Over the coming weeks we intend to:
• Organise a public information meeting to explain the substation proposal and the planning process.
• Hold a Submission Clinic, where residents can receive practical assistance in preparing their own submissions to ACP.
• Continue engaging with environmental, heritage and community organisations regarding the proposal.
• Provide regular updates and guidance through our social media channels.
"Every valid submission matters, and every voice counts. ACP is required to consider all valid planning observations received before the deadline.
"Whether your concerns relate to archaeology, biodiversity, traffic, water quality, residential amenity, landscape, or the cumulative industrialisation of our area, your submission can make a real difference.
"Further details of the public meeting and Submission Clinic will be announced shortly.
"Once again, thank you to everyone who has supported this campaign so far.
"The Mayo County Council decision is an encouraging step, but the planning process is not yet complete. We encourage everyone to remain engaged as we enter this next important phase.
