Logic around N5 verge cutting while local roads are overgrown questioned

THE closing of the N5 dual carriageway for verge cutting while local roads are overgrown with vegetation drew some comment at the monthly Castlebar Municipal District meeting.

There are many local roads where two cars cannot pass in places, Councillor Michael Kilcoyne noted, and asking why they aren't being given attention.

Meanwhile, at the same time, the N5, with double lanes, is to be closed to cut the grass.

It's not good enough, he stated.

Councillor Ger Deere, cathaoirleach, said the council were closing the new road where grass will never grow long enough to come out on the road.

Yet the Pheasant Hill roundabout was a disgrace with weeds in the middle of the island.

“I don't get the logic,” he commented.

There has been exceptional growth this season, Councillor Al McDonnell noted, and where there are dangers on local roads they are entitled to deal with them on health and safety grounds.
