Mayo Tidy Towns group roll out Bin Your Butt initiative

PEOPLE are being asked to 'Bin Your Butt' in a new community project to tackle cigarette litter in Westport.

Westport Tidy Towns have started mounting hand-painted tin can ashtrays onto walls around the town.

Upcycled from the local Castlecourt Hotel, the ashtrays have a cheeky 'Bin Your Butt' sign on them. The cans were painted by students from the Sacred Heart School, so every one is a little different.

The hope is that no more cigarette butts will be found littering the pavements in Westport, which has a long history of civic pride and success on the national Tidy Towns stage.

A social media post about the initiative by Westport Tidy Towns explained: 'It's a small fix, but it's the kind of small fix that we hope adds up - cleaner streets, less plastic pollution (cigarette filters are actually a huge microplastic problem), and a nice reminder that community pride doesn't need a big budget. Just a tin can, some paint, and people who care.
