Details announced for Mayo homecoming in Castlebar this evening

Mayo will receive a hero's welcome in Castlebar this evening after ending a 75-year wait for the Sam Maguire Cup.

Andy Moran's side beat Kerry 1-20 to 1-17 in yesterday's All-Ireland senior football final at Croke Park.

A stirring second-half comeback, sparked by Darragh Beirne's goal after the restart, saw Mayo survive a late Kerry surge to claim the title.

Thousands of supporters are expected at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park for the team's return.

Gates open at 3 p.m., with entertainment from local acts Gorilla Radio, Billow Wood and For Folk Sake getting underway at 3.30pm.

The Mayo squad will be presented to the crowd at 6 p.m.

Mayo GAA is asking supporters to arrive early, with large crowds including many children expected.

No alcohol, flares or large flagpoles will be permitted in the grounds, and a traffic management plan with diversions will be in place around Castlebar.

There is no parking at the venue itself.

An official "26 MO SAM" number plate sign will be on sale inside the grounds for €5, with proceeds going to the Mayo players' training fund.

Supporters are asked to avoid unofficial merchandise, which offers no benefit to the county board or players.

Former US President Joe Biden, whose ancestors hail from Ballina, was among those to send congratulations, saying "Sam is coming home" and urging his "friends in Mayo" to enjoy the moment. Liam and Noel Gallagher, whose mother Peggy grew up in Charlestown, also posted messages of congratulations online.
