Exciting finales in store as Mayo Women's League enters decision stage
AN intriguing finale is in store in Division One of the Eco-Powered Cabinets Mayo Women's League.
A Killala victory over Castlebar Celtic on Friday evening has pulled them level on points with the county town side, with both nipping at the heels of table toppers Kiltimagh Knock United.
With just two games left in the league, and KK facing both of the chasers, this competitive division has some excitement left to play out to decide this year's champions.
Manulla hold a six-point lead over Swinford in the Premier Division, albeit with one more game played. So expect a cracking encounter when the sides meet next Friday evening.
And Snugboro need one more victory on the last day of the season in two weeks' time to make their return to the women's ranks a winning one in Division Two. Crossmolina are still in contention there and need full points against Achill Rovers next weekend to keep the pressure on.
With two postponements in the Premier Division on Friday, the evening's only game saw Manulla return from Kilmore with a 3-0 win. Captain Stacey Freyne led the way with two first-half goals. And top scorer in the league, Katie Heaney, added to her season tally 18 minutes from full-time.
A great struggle played out between Castlebar Celtic and Killala, where the visitors to Celtic Park went home 2-3 winners.
Grainne Flynn saw Celtic race into an early lead with three minutes on the clock. Aoibhin Bilbow was on the end of an Alva Munnelly assist for Killala on 14 minutes in the half's only other goal.
Celtic took the lead again in the 58th minute only to see Alison Long almost immediately cancel out Grace Carroll's score. And it was Ciara Kearney who was to have the final say with what turned out to be the winner for Killala 10 minutes from the end.
Both sides are on 18 points, with Kiltimagh Knock on 22, with two games left to play. KK and Ballina Town had a free evening with Ballinrobe Town and Westport United conceeding.
In Division 2, Snugboro ran out 3-1 winners over Glenhest Rovers. Their visitors pulled a goal back on the hour mark through Milly Allen after falling three behind, but failed to gain any more ground on the table toppers.
Ballyvary Blue Bombers enjoyed a 2-1 win at home over Achill Rovers, a goal for each side coming from the penalty spot, the second one proving to be the match winner.
