Mayo victory drives bigger data surge than World Cup final
eir has reported a massive surge in data usage on Sunday as overjoyed GAA fans shared the historic news of Mayo’s Croke Park victory.
Supporters all across the country took to their phones to celebrate, resulting in a 36% increase in data usage compared to an average day.
No surprise the celebrations were particularly visible in Mayo, where data traffic across eir's four main mobile network sites in Castlebar jumped by almost 49% on the night of the team homecoming, rising from 4.5TB the previous Sunday to 6.7TB.
The last time Mayo won the All-Ireland, fans followed the action almost exclusively on radio, in an era long before television brought live sporting moments into Irish homes.
The hotly anticipated World Cup final between Spain and Argentina generated an additional 30% - and not nearly the same excitement.
Not to be outdone, entertainment fans are also sharing news and opinions on the summer’s hottest shows.
Love Island once again became part of the nation's nightly routine, peaking with one in four viewers tuning in to Sunday’s final via eir TV.
The insights come from eir's fixed network, mobile network and eir TV viewing data.
