Mayo's All-Ireland heroes invited to civic reception in Westport

AN email is on its way to the GAA county board inviting Mayo's All-Ireland heroes to a civic reception in Westport.

District cathaoirleach Councillor Brendan Mulroy today proposed that a formal reception take place in Westport Town Hall to honour their achievements.

His Westport-Belmullet Municipal District colleagues supported his proposal at their monthly meeting this morning where councillors extended their congratulations to the team and management on what has been a fantastic week for the county.

It has been indicated that Mayo County Council will hold a civic reception, but that won't come before the council until its next monthly meeting in September.

Regardless of what they were doing, Councillor Mulroy said he wanted a reception in Westport. And he asked that the invitation be sent to the Mayo County GAA Board today.

The point was made by Councillor Peter Flynn that Kobe McDonald is due to leave for Australia in the next few weeks so it's important to hold a reception as soon as possible.

It would be the second high-profile reception hosted in the town hall this summer, following the celebrations to mark the visit of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Meanwhile, councillors were looking forward to the team's visit to Kilmeena GAA Club later in the day as part of their open top bus tour today.
