Skatepark reopens in Mayo county town

THE skatepark in Castlebar has reopened ahead of the bank holiday weekend.

Mayo County Council has confirmed that phase two of the skatepark at Lough Lannagh has been finished ahead of schedule and is now open for use over the bank holiday weekend and beyond.

Minister of State Alan Dillon has welcomed the reopening of the facility.

The seven-week construction project began on June 15, with the existing skatepark closed for the duration of the works. The long-awaited extension delivers significant improvements and expanded facilities, building on the success of what has become one of Mayo's most popular recreational amenities.

Said Minister Dillon: “The skatepark at Lough Lannagh has become a hugely popular destination for skateboarders, scooter riders and BMX users from across Mayo and beyond. This latest investment enhances the facility, provides new opportunities for young people to be active, and further strengthens Lough Lannagh as a key community and recreational hub.

"The expansion reflects the growing demand for high-quality outdoor recreation facilities and demonstrates our commitment to supporting projects that promote health, wellbeing and social inclusion. I want to commend Mayo County Council and all those involved in delivering this project."

Minister Dillon also welcomed a proposal from Councillor Donna Sheridan for the provision of a sheltered seating area at the facility.

He said: "Councillor Sheridan has highlighted an important issue regarding the need for a sheltered seating area for parents and families using the skatepark. Similar facilities are available at the skate park in Westport, and I believe it is a proposal that deserves careful consideration as we continue to improve amenities at Lough Lannagh.

"The skatepark is a fantastic asset for local families and visitors alike. Ensuring there are suitable seating and shelter facilities for parents and guardians would further enhance the experience for everyone using the park."
