Maxwell pushing for repairs to pier in west Mayo
THE urgent need for repair works at Lecanvey Pier in west Mayo has again been stressed by Councillor Chris Maxwell.
He cited a 'massive hole' in the structure, urging that a stitch in time saves nine, and repairs are needed now.
For the second month running Councillor Maxwell raised the issue about the pier at a municipal district meeting, saying he and a few good works people could solve it. But they won't solve it in another month or two, he warned, and where will it be then.
If not sorted it will undermine the whole harbour. They might not do a perfect fix but a small job would save it, he commented
He was told a marine workshop had been due to take place before their monthly meeting, but the meeting was deferred, with the workshop also then deferred.
Councillor Brendan Mulroy asked why it wasn't dealt with, saying a workshop isn't going to solve the problem.
The members were told the site has been inspected, with further inspections required. There is no indication of immediate risk to the overall stability of the structure. However, arrangements are being made for a detailed structural survey, which will determine any repairs necessary.
A request for support for funding has been issued to the Oireachtas members.
Councillor Mulroy wasn't happy with the possible timeline, saying they need to get the assessment moved on as quickly as possible.
