Funding for master plan to transform Mayo quay area

A FUNDING allocation of €100,000 for a master plan at the Roman Island area of Westport Quay has been sanctioned by Mayo County Council.

It encompasses the area around the boatstand, angling centre, car park and factory.

The four local area councillors - cathaoirleach Brendan Mulroy, Peter Flynn, Johnny O'Malley and Chris Maxwell - have been meeting with the council executive about a master plan for the Quay. In recent days, chief executive Kevin Kelly confirmed they will be allocating €100,000 for a plan.

It will be a game changer for this unique, iconic location, which attracts many people on a daily basis, said Councillor Mulroy.

Councillor Flynn said the masterplan will hopefully set up the transformation of the Quay.

He pointed to the small investment they made at the Point, which is a popular swimming area used by people from a wide catchment area, but also with a social aspect, where friends and families meet up.

The Quay has so much potential, when you see the amount of camper vans, people walking and coming and going on the ferries. It is incredible but it needs a structure to it.

Possible inclusions that might be considered include an aires facility for camper vans, picnic space and walkway around the back of Roman Island.
