Achill Rovers crowned Mayo Women's League Division 2 Cup champions

A resolute Achill Rovers claimed some coveted silverware at Umbro Park Milebush on Saturday evening after they defeated Crossmolina 1-0 in the Mayo Women’s League Division Two Cup Final.

The opening 20 minutes of the first half proved to be a cagey affair as both sides were wary of making any mistakes in their respective bids for the silverware.

The first noteworthy effort of the contest arrived on 25 minutes, when a chance fell to Crossmolina’s Rachel Bourke whose stinging drive was tipped over her crossbar by the vigilant Achill custodian, Mairéad Corrigan. From the subsequent corner-kick, Sarah Gough’s pinging delivery fell to Sarah Mulligan and the latter’s close-range effort was bravely blocked by the Rovers ‘keeper.

A beleaguered Achill remained on the backfoot for the remainder of the first half, however, Mairéad Corrigan’s goal remained intact, and the sides were scoreless at the break.

Achill grew in stature during the second half and the yellow and blue snatched the lead on 68 minutes courtesy of a fine strike from Kiera Corrigan.

A brave Crossmolina upped the tempo towards the end of the game, and they almost grabbed a late equaliser, but Niamh Lynn’s effort was saved by the Rovers custodian.

Afterwards, the Achill Rovers players, management and supporters celebrated a famous victory at Mayo football HQ.
