Ballyglass bow out of FAI Women's Amateur Shield at quarterfinal stage
Ballyglass suffered defeat in the FAI Women's Amateur Shield quarterfinals after a long trip down to Wexford on Sunday.
Their hosts, Fern United, ran out 4-1 winners as the Mayo side's superb run came to an end.
After an early morning start, and playing in very warm conditions in the sunny southeast, the visitors started very brightly with an early effort from distance by Ava Keane that just missed the target. Ballyglass continued to dominate but on 19 minutes, against the run of play, Ferns opened the scoring.
Not to be outdone, Ballyglass regrouped and in their next attack Keane ran onto an excellent through ball from Hannah Hughes and smashed it into the top corner from the edge of the box.
On 26 minutes Ferns took the lead once again with a powerful shot from distance. And again Ballyglass rallied and were unlucky when a long distance effort from Hughes crashed off the crossbar.
The second half started brightly for the hosts and they extended their lead on 52 minutes to 3-1. Ballyglass were chasing the game from here and created a few chances before Ferns wrapped it up on 92 minutes.
It has been an unbelievable run in the competition for this very young team and the future certainly looks bright for the women from Ballyglass.
