Calls to have master plan for popular Mayo tourist location finalised

A master plan for Keel needs to be finalised.

Consultation opened two years and the local community need to see it implemented.

The area has seen an influx of 3-4,000 people in recent weeks, on top of the campsite that is already there, Councillor Paul McNamara told a district meeting.

But there is no infrastructure in place for those numbers, with only two toilets in operation at the moment.

Keel's infrastructure cannot sustain the influx, he said. Residents have been wondering what will be done to help with the situation, and matters such as rolling out pedestrian crossings.

Councillor McNamara noted that public consultation on the master plan is ongoing for over two years now and he urged council management to have it finalised to deal with issues arising during the tourism season.

He acknowledged the work Mayo County Council is doing in keeping the area clean.
