Ballroom celebrated Sam Maguire's 1950 visit to Mayo village

A photograph capturing the joy of Sam Maguire's visit to Islandeady in 1950 has surfaced, offering a glimpse of Mayo's last All-Ireland celebrations.

Peter Solan, captain of the victorious 1950 Mayo team, brought the trophy to the Gaiety Ballroom in Islandeady.

He is pictured holding Sam, flanked by his sister Margaret McCormack, a maternity nurse at Mayo General Hospital, and Freda Conway.

Tea was served to mark the occasion, as the photograph shows. The photographer's identity is not known.

The image is courtesy of P.J. Conway, son of Freda Conway.

The Connaught Telegraph would like to hear from readers who can identify others in the photograph, or who have memories of the celebrations to share.
