Mayo captivates German audiences in popular travel programme

Mayo and the Wild Atlantic Way have been showcased in a popular German travel documentary series called Wunderschön (which roughly translates as ‘absolutely beautiful’).

The special Ireland episode was seen by over 500,000 people across Germany on the public TV network WDR.

It will air on other TV channels over the coming months, reaching an estimated three million viewers in total. Filming took place here last summer and was supported by Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland.

Filming took place here at multiple locations including Westport House, Bertra Beach (with Aidan O’Sullivan and his beautiful Irish wolfhounds) and at Keem Bay. The crew stayed in the Westport Coast Hotel.

Nadine Lehmann, Tourism Ireland's manager for DACH countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland), said: “Tourism Ireland was delighted to support the filming of ‘Wunderschön’ on the Wild Atlantic Way.

"The episode captured the essence of this special part of Ireland – its beautiful landscapes, rich heritage and welcoming people. Our aim is to inspire viewers of the show to come and experience Mayo and the Wild Atlantic Way for themselves.”
