Major housing development goes to tender in Mayo county town

Minister of State Alan Dillon has welcomed a significant milestone for housing delivery in Castlebar, with Mayo County Council inviting tenders for the construction of 64 homes at Lawn Road.

The development will include 30 three-bedroom homes, four two-bedroom homes, 12 duplex apartments and 18 one-bedroom apartments.

Works will also provide a new access route from Lawn Road, footpaths, cycling and parking facilities, landscaping, public lighting and ducting for current and future electric-vehicle parking.

Minister Dillon said: “Moving the Lawn Road development to tender is a significant and welcome step.

"These 64 homes will provide a broad mix of accommodation for families, couples and individuals, while the associated infrastructure and public spaces will contribute positively to the surrounding area.”

The project forms part of Mayo County Council’s wider housing programme for Castlebar.

Phase 3 of Lios na Circe will provide a further 37 homes, including accessible apartments, universal-access bungalows and a specially designed unit.

Plans are also advancing for 13 apartments at Ellison Street, comprising studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom homes.

The town-centre proposal includes landscaping, public lighting and a new archway intended to facilitate future public access.

Minister Dillon has consistently pushed for the delivery of additional social and affordable housing across Castlebar with the first 35-unit affordable housing scheme currently in construction.

He has continued to engage with Mayo County Council, with local councillors and the Department of Housing to maintain momentum on developments including Lawn Road, Lios na Circe, Snugboro and Ellison Street.

He also acknowledged the sustained work of Mayo County Council’s housing, architectural and technical teams, together with the contribution of local councillors in the Castlebar MD representing their communities and supporting housing delivery.

“I want to recognise the detailed work being undertaken by Mayo County Council’s housing team including Catherine McConnell and Oliva Gallagher and the continued input of local councillors.

"Developments of this scale require cooperation, careful planning and persistence at every stage.”

Minister Dillon said his determined ambition over the coming years is to help deliver a strong pipeline of social, affordable and mixed-tenure homes for the entire county.
