Two Mayo women finalists in National Brown Bread Baking test

It seems there’s something in the Mayo mix again this year as two local bakers have secured their places in the semi-finals of the National Brown Bread Baking Competition, sponsored by Euronics in proud partnership with the National Ploughing Association (NPA) and the Irish Country Women’s Association (ICA).

Sarah Davitt, Westport, and Ann Loftus, Bonniconlon, are among the eight talented contestants competing at the National Ploughing Championships' semi-finals in Screggan, Tullamore, Co. Offaly, on September 15 and 16.

The top four will go forward to the final on September 17.

With last year’s winning brown bread baker, Maureen Igoe from Bonniconlon, taking home the top prize, Mayo bakers are once again turning up the heat for the competition.

Speaking on the achievement, Sarah Davitt said: “I'm absolutely delighted to be named as one of the finalists.

"I'm so excited and honoured to be baking alongside the other finalists! I still can't believe my bread was chosen as one of the final 8”.

The champion will take home €5,000 in cash and a NEFF Slide & Hide oven worth over €2,000.

Three finalists on the will win a €500 Euronics gift card, while all other finalists will receive a €250 Euronics gift card and a Neff hamper.

Ann Loftus of Bonniconlon Guild Mayo Federation ICA, said: “I am beyond excited to head to National Ploughing Championships in September equipped with my baking bowl. I hope I measure up."

The competition is set to be a feast for the senses, with the two Mayo bakers hoping to follow in Maureen Igoe’s footsteps and take home the coveted title.
