410 new homes began construction in Mayo in 2026
Minister Dara Calleary has welcomed the commencement of 410 homes in Mayo in the first seven months of 2026, with housing commencements up 169% in a single month in July compared to the same period last year.
The latest figures released by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage show that 3,028 new homes were commenced in July - an increase of 169% compared to the same period last year, when 1,125 new homes were commenced.
This brings the total number of new homes commenced since the start of the year to 18,974, up 152% from the 7,539 homes commenced in the first seven months of 2025 and representing the second highest number of new homes since recording began in 2014.
Speaking on the numbers Minister Calleary has said: “These figures are a sign of momentum holding strong in the housing sector.
"The key to solving the housing crisis is increasing supply, and every home that begins construction today is another step closer to handing over keys to a family tomorrow.
“It is particularly encouraging to see 410 homes commence in Mayo since the beginning of this year alone. These homes will make a real difference to individuals and families looking to put down roots in our community.
“Housing remains the government’s top priority and it is committed to supporting measures that increase supply, accelerate delivery, and ensure more people can access affordable and secure housing.
“There is still much more work to do, but these figures show that the actions being taken are having an impact.”
