Knock Basilica illuminated to mark 50 years at the heart of the National Novena

Knock Basilica was illuminated by special commemorative lighting last Friday marking 50 years since its opening and bringing the 2026 National Novena to a prayerful conclusion.

The Basilica has been central to the National Novena since the very first Novena took place in 1977.

Over the past five decades, it has welcomed generations of pilgrims who have gathered for the celebration of the Eucharist and moments of reflection and hope.

As darkness fell on Friday evening, a stirring trumpet salute echoed through the grounds as the Basilica was momentarily darkened.

The iconic hymn ‘Lady of Knock’ was sung from the outdoor ambulatory, creating an emotional atmosphere as all those gathered participated in this significant milestone in the Basilica’s history.

The illuminated Basilica was a beautiful and poignant sight, a fitting commemoration of its 50-year history and the countless people who have crossed its threshold over the years.

Speaking at the conclusion of the National Novena, Rector of Knock Shrine, Fr Richard Gibbons PP, said: “To see the Basilica illuminated tonight, as we bring the National Novena to a close, is an emotional reminder of all that has taken place here over these past 50 years."

The lighting formed a fitting conclusion to this year’s National Novena, as Knock Shrine continues to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Knock Basilica throughout 2026.
