Mayo Hoops set for Junior Cup last four against Kilkenny's Evergreen

Castlebar Celtic will discover exactly what stands between them and a first-ever FAI Junior Cup final when they take on Evergreen in the semi-final on the weekend of September 6.

Celtic booked their place in the last four with a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Gorey Rangers in Wexford on Saturday.

Johnny Cocozza had put the Mayo side in front inside four minutes, only for Gorey to level twice, the second coming with virtually the last kick of normal time through Calem Devereux.

Neither side could find a winner in extra time, and it was substitute goalkeeper Pere Basquille, on for the injured Stefan Hester, who proved the hero, saving Ethan Vickers' spot-kick as Celtic held their nerve to win the shoot-out 5-3.

The result sets up a home draw for Stevie Gavin's side against Evergreen, a Kilkenny District League club managed by Gary Maher who have been one of the form teams of this year's competition.

Evergreen have accounted for Kildare Town, Kildrum Tigers, Colga and Pike Rovers on their way to the semi-final, and will arrive in Mayo having reached the FAI Junior Cup final twice before without ever landing the trophy.

Reigning Connaught Junior Cup and Mayo Super League champions, Celtic have spent much of the year chasing the one honour missing from their 101-year history.

The clash is anticipated to be played in Umbro Park, Milebush as Celtic have home advantage.

The other semi-final pairs Coachford against Trim Celtic, with the final pencilled in for October 4.
