Former Mayo boxing star John Hamrock features in Amharc Éireann archive
Highlights of the 1963 All-Ireland bantam weight championship semi-final at the National Stadium, Dublin, featuring Castlebar Boxing Club's John Hamrock, are now available to view online.
They were shared to the website of Amharc Éireann, Ireland’s first long-running indigenous newsreel series produced by Gael Linn.
Billed as 'Hamrock Beats Noone', the footage is 52 seconds long with Irish commentary.
While the Castlebar ace was subsequently defeated in the final, this footage clearly shows glimpses of his speed, tenacity and swift punching power.
John Hamrock, who resides at Pound Road, Castlebar, gave long and active service to Castlebar Boxing Club after retiring from the ring.
He is a lifelong supporter of the Mayo senior football team and was overjoyed a number of weeks ago to be at Croke Park when his county finally secured the Sam Maguire after a 75-year absence.
