Mayo villagers up in arms over dangers faced after road closure

Residents have raised concerns over a dangerous situation that has developed since the closure of the N58 at Straide due to bridge works.

An email send to elected representatives stated: "The L7141 is now experiencing dangerously high traffic volumes who are bypassing the closure.

"Recent hedge trimming has helped improve visibility.

"However the narrow road width does not allow two cars to pass.

"This situation will only get worse with the return to school imminent.

"Can you please arrange for the construction of pull in areas at regular intervals.

"Placing personnel at the junctions to ensure access is only for locals would also help.

"Can you please ensure these measures are carried out as soon as possible."

Castlebar Independent Councillor Michael Kilcoyne said he fully supported the residents and will be putting down a motion for the next meeting of Mayo County Council.

"The people of Straide have been treated shabbily, first the bus stopped picking them up at the Bus Stop and, secondly, Mayo County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland decided to close the main road to carry out works on a local bridge and the people have to detour on a road around by Bohola, the condition of which are a source of great concern."
