Mayo town to host special event for Culture Night 2026

Claremorris Historical Society will host a special double event in Claremorris Town Hall for Culture Night 2026, which takes place on Friday, September 18. From 4.15 p.m. to 7.15 p.m. the images featured in its recent presentation entitled 'Through the streets of Claremorris 1900-1925' will be on exhibition in the Town Hall Studio. This exhibition marks the recent publication of the 1926 Census allowing the viewer to step back in time and experience life in Claremorris as it was in the first quarter of the twentieth century, just before the census was taken.

This will be followed at 7.45 p.m. in the main hall by an illustrated talk entitled 'Images of Claremorris 1926-1960.' For this special bilingual event dozens of photographs of people, shops and streetscapes from the Main Street Gathering archives have been carefully restored in full colour by Andrew Newman. Local historian Colmán Ó Raghallaigh will present the fascinating stories behind each of them. There will be a refreshment break during this event.

Admission is free and all are welcome.
