Mayo councillor calls for urgent ESB and Eirgrid action over Erris power outages

A Belmullet-based councillor has raised serious concerns about ongoing electricity outages in the Erris region, calling on ESB and Eirgrid to address the state of the network at a meeting of Mayo County Council's Environment SPC.

Cllr Sean Carey said outages in Erris tend to strike during bad weather, but that supply can be lost even in calm conditions.

He said the impact on residents is significant, particularly for people with disabilities and those reliant on medical devices, who are frequently left without power at no notice.

The Fianna Fáil representative noted that repairs can take considerable time, and that outages tend to last longer in rural areas of the region.

He said he has gathered information on the number of outages recorded in Erris over a period of several months, and that the current level of service is not good enough for local people.

Cllr Carey said the state of the existing electricity lines needs to be addressed, and he called on ESB and Eirgrid to carry out the necessary upgrades to ensure a proper standard of service for the Erris community.

He described the effect of outages on vulnerable people as devastating, saying it leaves them unable to carry out day-to-day tasks, and appealed for upgrade works to be prioritised in the north west region of the county.
