Tributes paid to a departing Mayo civilian staff member of An Garda Síochána

Tributes have been paid in court to a departing civilian staff member of An Garda Síochána.

Ballina woman Avril Greham is leaving to take on a new role after 11 years working between the superintendent’s office and the Courts Office in Ballina.

“She has been a great support to us in the background,” said court presenter, Sergeant Fiona Farrell at Ballina District Court.

“I have worked with Avril for many years and know what she is capable of and what she does behind the scenes."

Avril is taking up a new position with Independent Living Movement Ireland as a community development officer.

“Basically, she will be empowering disabled people in isolated areas around the country. She is going to be a big loss, and we wish her well in her future career,” said Sergt. Farrell.

Solicitor Peter Flynn said Avril’s absence will be keenly felt.

“What the gardaí will do in her absence I don’t even know,” he commented.

The Courts Office also paid tribute to Avril’s “passion and determination” which she will carry into her new position.

Judge Vincent Deane said he was sad to see Avril go and wished her well.

“We go back a long way to the superintendent’s office where she was taking care of me then when I was a State Solicitor.

"She has been here supporting the court presenters, and you are quite right Mr Flynn, I’m not sure what the Gardaí are going to do without her,” said Judge Deane.

Avril thanked her colleagues, Judge Deane, courts staff, and solicitors for their support over the years.

“I have enjoyed my time and it’s not goodbye it’s just see you later for now,” said.
