Mayo councillor calls for common sense and swift resolution to GAA integration impasse

CASTLEBAR Councillor Ger Deere has called for urgent progress and 'a practical, common sense resolution' to the ongoing GAA integration issue, emphasising his strong support for the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA), Camogie Association, and local clubs, including Castlebar Mitchels.

Councillor Deere said the current impasse is causing unnecessary frustration for players, coaches, volunteers and families across Mayo, particularly in Castlebar where LGFA participation continues to grow.

“Our LGFA players and coaches deserve clarity, respect, and equal treatment,” said Councillor Deere. “Castlebar Mitchels and ladies clubs right across Mayo are doing outstanding work to promote girls’ and women’s sport. They should not be left in limbo because of administrative delays or disagreements at national level.”

He noted that integration has long been recognised as the right path forward and that communities have already embraced the principle of a fully unified GAA family.

“The organisations involved must sit down, resolve the outstanding issues, and deliver a structure that supports all players equally.”

Councillor Deere highlighted the impact on Castlebar, where demand for LGFA facilities, coaching support and development pathways continues to rise.

He added that Mayo’s sporting community has always been strongest when united.

“Our clubs, volunteers and families work together every day. Integration should reflect that reality, not complicate it.”
