Sam Maguire to make a visit to central Mayo

Sam Maguire is continuing his tour of Mayo having come to the county earlier in the summer following a long absence, and he's on his way to Islandeady today.

To coincide with Islandeady Community Council's 50th anniversary, Islandeady GAA have arranged for the Sam Maguire Cup to visit the pitch this very day (Sunday, September 13) from 12 to 3 p.m. as part of a community celebration.

This event is open to every individual and family in Islandeady and Glenisland. All are invited and all are welcome.

The Islandeady Community Council 50th anniversary celebrations, which continue throughout this month, got off to a very good start at the Remberance Mass last Sunday (September 6).

Fr. Chris Brennan spoke about the importance of being involved in community for the benefit of all. He commended the effort, commitment and hard work that volunteers in all groups give for their community, stressing the impact and rewards that may be obtained from people working together while also uniting a community working towards the one goal.

Acknowledging the efforts of volunteers gone before us, the names of previous deceased community representatives (from 1976-2026) were called out by one of Islandeady Community Council's founding members.

As well as Sam's visit today, the anniversary celebrations include a guided tour of 40 heritage sites of significance around the area next Sunday (September 20) from 2 to 5 p.m., organised by Islandeady Heritage Group. Seats for the bus must be booked in advance by contacting Noreen Sadler on (087) 298 2694 by the deadline of 6 p.m. today. The cost is €5 per person and all are welcome.
