Volunteers needed to support children at Mayo University Hospital

Children in Hospital Ireland (CIH Ireland) are looking for locals to grow their play volunteer team in Mayo University Hospital. More than 462 children have been supported by play volunteers in the hospital so far this year.

With almost 400 play volunteers across 15 hospitals, Children in Hospital Ireland works to create a more positive experience of hospital for children and their families. Play volunteers engage with children up to 16 years of age through card games, arts and crafts, board games or just a friendly chat.

Elizbeth Morrin, volunteer manager at Children in Hospital Ireland said: “Our play volunteers are warmly welcomed by staff and families in the paediatric ward at Mayo University Hospital and we are so excited to grow our team. Our volunteers are a positive distraction and provide fun that the whole family can get involved in. It also gives parents a chance to take a break, get a cup of tea or even attend to other siblings. It is a simple service that makes such a difference.”

Children in Hospital Ireland are looking for volunteers to dedicate 2 hours a week to provide play in the hospital. Volunteers must be 18 years or older and will be fully vetted and trained. Applications close on October 9. Those interested can make an application online by visiting here.
