Need to understand issues behind Mayo data centre refusal

MINISTER of State Alan Dillon says Mayo must continue to be a county where businesses can invest and create jobs following An Coimisiún Pleanála's decision to refuse planning permission for a proposed data centre in Killala.

He decribed it as 'disappointing news' for Killala and north Mayo, stating: “Many people had hoped this project would bring jobs, support local businesses and create new opportunities in the area.

“I have also spoken with local Councillor Jarlath Munnelly, who outlined the frustration being felt in the community following this decision.”

Said Minister Dillon: “I fully respect the independent planning process and the decision that has been made. However, when a project of this scale is refused, we need to understand clearly what issues led to that outcome and what lessons can be learned for the future.

“As Minister of State with responsibilities across both Enterprise and Climate, Energy and the Environment, I will engage with the relevant agencies, including IDA Ireland, EirGrid and Mayo County Council, to examine the issues identified and the steps needed to ensure Mayo remains competitive for future investment.”

He added: “People want to see good jobs within reach of where they live and opportunities for young people to build their futures locally. Mayo has enormous potential, and we need to make sure we are ready to compete for investment that can deliver lasting benefits for our communities.”
