Mayo champions appearance on The Late, Late Show a PR masterstroke for sport and county

The appearance by members of the Mayo All-Ireland SFC-winning team on last night's screening of The Late, Late Show on RTE One television was nothing short of a PR masterstroke for the sport and the county.

While their triumph over Kerry at Croke Park on July 26, 2026, and subsequent celebrations had already won the hearts of the nation, the interaction between them and show host Patrick Kielty further enhanced their reputation and status as outstanding ambassadors.

Asked to sum up what it meant for Mayo, coach and former great Colm Boyle said apart from giving every Mayo person a massive lift following 75 years without the trophy and countless disappointments along the way, it has inspired a new generation of footballers and supporters.

On the same theme, Aidan O'Shea said it had sent a surge of energy through everybody involved and the reception the players have been receiving everywhere is remarkable.

Diarmuid O'Connor spoke about meeting Shane Lowry last Sunday after his Irish Open victory in Doonbeg, Co. Clare, last weekend.

A video captured of him and his brother Cillian singing 'The Green and Red of Mayo' with Lowry went viral.

He did not rule out doing the same at the Oasis concert at Slane Castle on September 4 and 5, 2027.

The Crossmolina ace said he could not put into words what it was like to win the Sam Maguire alongside his brother Kobe McDonald.

Kobe confirmed he is due to return to Australia in early November before returning for Jordan's wedding some weeks later.
