Mayo communities mourn death of 'gentleman' Walter Carter

The death of Walter Carter, Mountdaisy, Castlebar. and formerly of Killawalla, Westport, is widely mourned.

In his 91st year, he died on Sunday at Mayo University Hospital, surrounded by his family,

Predeceased by his wife Frances (née Morahan), he will be sadly missed and never forgotten by his daughters Marie Carter Lamb (U.K) and Jacqueline Coyle (Dublin), sons Walter (Mountdaisy), Michael (Kildare) and Francis (Mountdaisy), grandchildren, brothers Tommy, Seanie and Peter, sisters Evelyn Staunton, Sr. Bridget Ann, Bernadette Burke, Martha Carter and Ann Carter, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, and his many friends and neighbours.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.

He was also predeceased by his parents Thomas and Bridget, brothers Michael and Fr. Seamus, and sisters Sr. Sarah, Kitty O’Brien and Mary Brady.

Walter had a great love for the Irish language and Irish culture. He was a fluent irish speaker and in his later years he enjoyed TG4 and Radio na Gaeltachta.

He was a talented sportsman in his youth and played handball and football with Ballintubber GAA Club.

Walter loved spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them swimming and playing gaelic football and rugby.

Walter will repose in Kilcoyne’s Funeral Home, Thomas Street, Castlebar, tomorrow (Wednesday) from 5 p.m., concluding with prayers at 7 p.m.

The funeral will arrive at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar, on Thursday at 10.45 a.m. for Requiem Mass at 11 a.m. followed by removal to Shannon Crematorium for service at 4 p.m.
