Disappointed bridges not lit up green and red after Mayo's win

THERE'S disappointment that the bridges along the Mall in Westport weren't lit up green and red after Mayo's historic All-Ireland win.

The lighting also needs to be changed for other awareness events, examples being Autism Awareness Month or World Heart Day, a meeting of Mayo County Council's roads and sustainable travel strategic policy committee has been told.

The views were expressed by a former local councillor, Christy Hyland, who is a member of the committee.

Mr. Hyland - a Galway native - said he is disappointed with maintenance of the lights, saying sometimes they are not lighting at all, they are broken.

And given the year that was in it, he was disappointed they weren't turned green and red.

It was always been done for special events, he commented, and visitors and the local community always comment very favourably on them.

Instead it is a case of some of them are lighting, some of them are not, and when they change colour they are left the same colour for months on end, and there's no changing for the different awareness weekends or events.

He was told the matter will be brought to the attention of the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District.
