Westport United are one big win away from Mayo Super League title

Westport United, after a 2-0 win over Ballina Town at the weekend, are now just one win away from a Mayo Super League title but they're going to have to do it the hard way.

United are going to have to beat all-conquering Castlebar Celtic in two weeks' time if they are going to claim the title.

That won't be easy, but if they were told at the start of the season that a win in their last game would guarantee them the title, they would probably have taken that.

Ballina Town changed management a few weeks ago but there was no sign of any hangover on Sunday. They looked refreshed and revitalised, and with an injection of young talent they were more than a match for the home team.

But United deserved their win, no doubt about that. Two first-half goals from Kevin Kitterick and Chris Kelly gave them the points. Both goals were clinical finishes from the edge of the area.

United controlled the second half. They were not spectacular but they were very solid, and Ballina Town never looked like scoring. United should have scored themselves but Emmet Peyton was in fine form in the Town goal.

Ballina Town have still to play Celtic twice. They meet each other in the final league game of the season and then they clash again in the Mayo Super Cup final.

For United, it's all about the league. Two weeks' time will tell a tale.
