Mayo church becomes Autism Friendly Champion

SAINT Mary’s Church in Westport officially become an Autism Friendly Champion on Sunday.

The recognition has been awarded by Westport Autism Friendly Town committee.

Sensory accommodations in the church include a quiet space in the sacristy where there is a sensory box with ear defenders and fidget tools, reduced lighting and noise.

There is also a special seating area available close by the sacristy and at the Sacred Heart altar, along with priority access into and out of the church via the South Mall corridor.

During the day St. Mary’s can be an autism-friendly quiet space to visit. The church also welcomes assistance dogs and offers a visual guide to the premises.

Westport Autism Friendly Town invite everyone to join them on their journey as they look to foster inclusion, understanding, and support for autistic people and their families in the local and wider community.
