Future use of west Mayo library building to be explored
THE library building in Westport needs to be assessed for its future use when the existing service moves to its new base at the redeveloped old convent on Altamount Street.
Local groups have an eye on the property for using it long-term, Councillor Peter Flynn told a municipal meeting.
People are asking what's going to happen with the old library, which is centrally located at the Crescent.
It's important to get clarity and he asked that the building be assessed, and what upgrade works it would require, and then send it out for expressions of interest and feedback.
Councillor Johnny O'Malley suggested it could be used as a base for the town band, who have no place to practice.
If they can't get that property, could the council get somewhere else for them, he urged management.
