Community advocate appointed Peace Commissioner for County Mayo

LOCAL woman and dedicated community advocate, Irene Cafferky, has been appointed as a Peace Commissioner for County Mayo by Catherine Ardagh, Minister of State with responsibility for International Law, Law Reform and Youth Justice.

The appointment, made under Section 88 of the Courts of Justice Act 1924, authorises Ms. Cafferky to carry out a range of important legal and administrative functions for members of the public. These include witnessing signatures on legal documents, administering statutory declarations and oaths, certifying documents and application forms including passport applications for children and signing specific legal certificates or warrants and orders required under various Acts of the Oireachtas.

A long-standing community volunteer, Ms. Cafferky is currently chairperson of Kilmovee Shamrocks Ladies Football Association and has been actively involved in numerous local and national initiatives over the years. Her appointment reflects her continued commitment to serving the people of Kilmovee, Urlaur, Ballaghaderreen and the wider Mayo community.

Speaking following her appointment, Ms. Cafferky said: “I am honoured to receive my warrant of appointment as a Peace Commissioner from Minister Catherine Ardagh and grateful for the opportunity to serve my community in this new role.

“I understand that accessing someone to witness or certify important legal documents can often be inconvenient, particularly in rural areas. I look forward to providing this service in a way that is accessible, approachable and free of charge for those who need it.

“I hope it will make an important service more readily available to individuals, families and local organisations.”

The Office of Peace Commissioner is an honorary voluntary position, with all services provided free of charge to the public.
