Moy Davitts capture Mayo LGFA intermediate title

Moy Davitts captured the Abbvie Mayo LGFA Intermediate Championship title following a 2-7 to 1-6 victory over Aghamore, at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park.

Both sides took time to settle, with the first score of the game not arriving until the sixth minute when Moy Davitts’ Orla McHale bisected the posts with a well-taken point.

Aghamore were steadily growing in stature, and they gleaned two points courtesy of their influential corner-forward Emily Duffy on nine and 12 minutes.

Moy Davitts bounced back though, and following a point from Sarah Carney, the Moysiders almost fashioned a goal after 16 minutes. Carney’s pointed attempt was parried by Cassie Niland and the ball fell into the path of Sandra Hall, whose rebound effort came back off the upright much to the relief of Niland.

Moy Davitts continued to search for a three-pointer and their work-rate was rewarded on 20 minutes when Kasey Ruane’s rocket of a strike found the back of the net.

However, a spellbinding move by Frank Burke’s Aghamore outfit ended with Emily Burke also rustling the back of the net, thus reducing the deficit to just two points, 1-4 to 1-2.

Yet all of Aghamore’s hard work appeared to have been undone on 25 minutes, when Ruane netted her second goal of the tie and the Moysiders led 2-4 to 1-2 at the interval.

Aghamore probably played the better football during the opening quarter of the second half, and at one stage the white and red trailed by just a goal, 2-5 to 1-5.

However, Moy Davitts’ Tracey Hall landed an inspirational skyscraper of a point on 49 minutes which was a badly needed score for Colm Carney’s side.

The Moysiders closed out proceedings impressively, and a late point from Orla McHale proved to be the vital insurance score in the end.
