Bressie, Bernard O’Shea, Roola Boola and more at Mayo arts centre
THE Linenhall, Castlebar, has another lively week ahead, with music, comedy, family creativity and hands-on workshops, offering something for audiences of all ages across Mayo. There’s plenty to choose from, so why not dive in and enjoy the arts at the heart of Mayo’s county town.
Today, Tuesday, October 13, tech enthusiasts of all ages can get stuck into Innov8 Island’s workshops, with Kids Robotics Club for ages 6-8 taking place at 4.15 p.m., 3D print and design for children aged 9-12 at 5.20 p.m., and 3D print and design for adults (16 plus) at 6.30 p.m.
On Thursday, October 15, musician, best-selling author and broadcaster Niall Breslin joins the Polaris Quartet at 7.30 p.m. for an intimate exploration of Bressie’s latest album, The Place That Has Never Been Wounded. Breslin’s cinematic compositions are brought together with strings, spoken word and visual design in an intimate performance that invites audiences to slow down, listen and connect.
This concert forms part of the programme for the West X West Technology, Venture and Cultural Festival that is taking place in Castlebar.
Also part of the West X West programme is a performance by Pilgrims at the Linenhall at 7.30 p.m. on Friday, October 16. Featuring Paul Noonan and Brian Crosby, the duo’s debut album Wintering is a restrained, piano-led collection rooted in space and atmosphere, while the live show also reaches back to their earlier work with Bell X1.
Also on Friday, Art Portfolio Prep continues for fifth and sixth year students, with a focus on building portfolios and exploring art history and different media. Participants should bring their sketchbook.
Saturday, October 17, is a busy day at the Linenhall. At 11.30 a.m., the annual children's arts festival, Roola Boola, kicks off with Scéal of a Time. Children and families are invited on a whistlestop tour of children’s literature before creating a new story of their own. Led by writer and theatre maker Alison Ní Mháirtín, the devising workshop uses Lámh signs, Gaeilge and English - but no prior knowledge of any of the three is required.
For more on the exciting line-up for Roola Boola 2026, pick up a programme from the Linenhall or visit the venue website (details below).
Saturday evening brings comedy, with Bernard O’Shea’s show, Pick Up Drop Off, at 7.30 p.m. One of Ireland’s best-known comedians and broadcasters, O’Shea explores the things we pick up through life - and the things we really should drop off along the way.
