Argentine tall ship invited to visit Mayo
AN invitation has been extended for the Argentine Navy training tall ship the ARA Libertad to visit Mayo next year.
The event would coincide with the 250th anniversary of the birth in Foxford of Admiral William Brown, founder of the Navy in Argentina.
Mayo County Council is to issue an invitation to Juan Carlos Romay, Chief of Staff, to have the Libertad visit Killala Bay in 2027.
Foxford Councillor Neil Cruise proposed the visit, saying it will strengthen the established links between County Mayo and both the Argentinian people and their Navy.
Argentine Ambassador Ana Laura Cachaza visited Mayo County Council this summer where the delegation she met with included representatives of the Admiral Brown Society in Foxford.
Next year will be momentous for Ireland-Argentina links, said Councillor Cruise, with the 250th anniversary of the birth of Admiral Brown, who is a huge figure in Argentina.
The ARA Libertad is undertaking a tour in 2027 and having it visit Killala Bay, as it has previously done, would further strengthen the relationship that has blossomed, he said.
There was unanimous support for the motion.
