Mayo football stars visit Shraigh National School
Monday, October 5, was a day of excitement, pride and unforgettable memories at Shraigh National School as the school welcomed very special guests, Mayo football stars Ryan O’Donoghue and Séamus Howard and the famous Sam Maguire Cup.
From the moment the visitors arrived, there was a wonderful atmosphere throughout the school. The excitement had been building for days, and the pupils and staff had worked incredibly hard to make sure everything was just right for this very special occasion.
The school was beautifully decorated with colourful bunting, creative displays and artwork celebrating Mayo football and the special guests. The children had also been busy researching the history of the Sam Maguire Cup, discovering interesting facts and learning about its significance in Irish sporting history. It was a fantastic opportunity to bring learning to life, combining history, sport, art, music and teamwork in a way that the children will remember for years to come.
Of course, the occasion was made even more meaningful by the fact that Ryan O’Donoghue is a past pupil of Shraigh National School. To welcome Ryan back to the very school where his educational journey began was an incredibly proud moment for the entire school community. It was a wonderful reminder to the pupils that, no matter how small your school or where you come from, you can go on to achieve great things.
The children gave Ryan and Séamus a fantastic welcome, singing songs they had prepared especially for the occasion. They also had the opportunity to ask questions, learning more about football, training, teamwork, determination and the experiences of playing at the highest level.
Séamus and Ryan were so generous with their time, answering the children’s questions, chatting with everyone, posing for photographs and signing jerseys. The smiles on the children’s faces said it all. These are the moments that make school life so special.
The pupils had also prepared beautiful handmade cards to present to the special guests as a little token of their appreciation. Another highlight of the celebration was a magnificent cake, specially made for the occasion. The cutting of the cake provided yet another lovely moment, bringing everyone together to celebrate a truly memorable visit.
Naturally, the opportunity to see the famous Sam Maguire Cup up close was a huge thrill for everyone. The children were absolutely delighted to have their photographs taken with the cup alongside Ryan and Séamus, creating precious memories that will be treasured for many years to come.
But perhaps what made the day most special was the wonderful sense of community that filled the school. Pupils, staff, parents, families and friends came together to share in the excitement and celebrate the achievements of the players.
Days like this demonstrate just how special a small school can be. Every child was included, every child had an opportunity to participate, and every child went home with a story to tell.
Shraigh National School are immensely proud of Ryan and Séamus, not only for their sporting achievements but also for their kindness, generosity and warmth they showed throughout the visit. They are both wonderful role models for the pupils and a shining example of what can be achieved through hard work, dedication and belief in yourself.
The pupils and staff at Shraigh National School would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Ryan and Séamus for taking the time to visit the school and for making the day so memorable. The school is also deeply grateful to everyone who helped prepare for the occasion and contributed to its success.
