Mayo drama group to present comedy play about All-Ireland victory

Kilmeena Drama Group will present a comedy play about Mayo winning the All-Ireland this year. The play entitled ‘The Curse Be Damned’ is written by Niall Conway and directed by Julie Moore.

The play will be held in Kilmeena Community Hall on Thursday, November 12 and Friday, November 13, at 8 p.m. each night. Tickets cost €10 and will be available at the door.

The writer of the play, Niall Conway, played football for Tyrone at minor, under-21, and masters level. Niall previously wrote a play entitled ‘The Lucky Shirt’ about Armagh’s All-Ireland winning campaign in 2024.

Niall said that ‘The Curse Be Damned’ is suitable for all the family.

“The play is a comedy and despite the funny side to it, there are a few poignant moments as well leading up to the final. It is a play that the whole family can go to and it should be a thoroughly enjoyable night for those attending.

“There are three main characters in the play and the story is a nice reminisce of Mayo’s All-Ireland winning campaign. It also shows the search for All-Ireland final tickets and all that entails. The story of the play is also heaped with plenty of banter and fun.”

Niall said that the country was captivated by Mayo’s historic success.

“The story of Mayo’s success was making news in Australia and America. The Mid-West Radio commentary of the game went viral, and hence that it where I got the name of the play when Stephen Grealis said at the end of the game, “the curse be damned” and I thought that was just too good a line not to use. I have been in touch with Stephen Grealis, and he knows that the play is happening.

“Mayo’s All-Ireland victory is the biggest sporting story of the year in Ireland.”

Niall thinks that the play could be staged in other venues across the county.

“Kilmeena Drama Group might bring the play to Westport, and I think the play could be staged in other venues in the county.”
