Mayo champs Breaffy bow out of provincial junior championship
Breaffy’s Connacht LGFA Junior Championship campaign came to an end at Shamrock Gaels Park as the home side secured victory in a goal-filled semi-final, writes Gavin Cawley.
Three goals from corner-forward Orlaith Scanlon proved crucial, as Shamrock Gaels made the most of their opportunities in difficult, wet and windy conditions.
Playing with the aid of the breeze in the opening half, Shamrock Gaels made a blistering start, racing into a 2-2 to no score lead after 12 minutes. Jade Lyons and Scanlon found the net as the Mayo champions struggled to settle.
Breaffy finally got on the scoreboard in the 13th minute when Sophie Moran pointed, despite having had an opportunity to find the net. Vivienne Ward added another point for the visitors, but Shamrock Gaels soon struck again, with Penny Barlow finishing after good work from Orla Devaney.
Moran and the hard-working Aisling Flanagan responded with points for Breaffy, but Scanlon found the net for a second time to leave the hosts firmly in control at 4-3 to 0-4 after 21 minutes.
Breaffy battled back into contention before the interval. Amy Golden raised a green flag, while Flanagan added a point to reduce the deficit.
Despite their improved finish to the half, Shamrock Gaels went in at the break holding a 4-3 to 1-5 advantage.
Breaffy needed a strong start to the second half but it was the hosts who extended their lead, with Scanlon converting two frees to restore a nine-point cushion.
The visitors had to wait until the 15th minute of the half for their first score, a point from Katie Moran. Scanlon replied with another free two minutes later to maintain the home side’s advantage.
Breaffy continued to search for a way back into the contest and had opportunities to raise further green flags. Their best chance came in the 50th minute when Sophie Moran attempted to pick out Katie Moran only for the pass to run beyond her and drift wide.
Flanaghan and Vivienne Ward both found the target as Breaffy reduced the gap to six points, but Shamrock Gaels finished strongly. Scanlon completed her hat trick with another goal before Orla Devaney added a sixth in injury time to seal the win.
While the final scoreline suggests a comfortable victory, Breaffy remained competitive for significant periods of the contest. Ultimately, Shamrock Gaels’ greater return in front of goal proved decisive, with their six goals making the difference on the day.
