Speeding vehicle overtaking on Mayo's N17 had only one headlight

GARDAÍ in Mayo have seized a vehicle that was speeding and overtaking on the N17, with just one working headlight.

As part of the bank holiday weekend road safety campaign the Mayo Roads Policing Unit carried out speed checks on the N17 last night.

They detected a vehicle travelling at 153km/h in a 100km/h zone, with only one working headlight. The vehicle was overtaking a number of vehicles at high speed on a double continuous white line.

The motorist was stopped and failed a roadside breath test for alcohol and was subsequently arrested. Subsequent testing revealed the driver was almost four times over the legal alcohol limit.

Gardaí reported that the motorist was charged with multiple offences and will appear before the courts in due course.

The vehicle was also seized under Section 109 of the Road Traffic Act.

The registered owner must now apply to the judge of the District Court for its return.
